Design a transparent splatter discount label

Let's design a stylish and transparent discount label you can then use for an online shop website, posters and similar media you want to advertise a discount on, using Photoshop.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 27th May 2012 |

1.

First of all, click here to download Ink splatter brushes and install them to Photoshop. Just double click the downloaded Dreevoo_com_ink_drips.abr and they will get installed automatically. Exit and launch Photoshop again.

If this doesn't work for you, click here for the how to install a new Photoshop brush tutorial.

Create a new Photoshop document, set the Width and Height to 500 pixels.

2.

Click Create a new layer button to create a new layer.

3.

Choose the Brush Tool.

4.

Right click the document and find your newly added Ink Splat brushes. Find the Ink splat 519 brush and click it.

Newly added brushes are probably at the end of brushes.

Set the brush Size to 500 and click outside of Brushes window to commit the brush you chose.

5.

Set some bright foreground color you like (see picture).

6.

Click on the document to draw an Ink Splatter.

7.

Choose the Eraser Tool ...

8.

... and erase all the unnecessary spots and little splatters around our new label.

9.

... choose the Smudge Tool.

10.

Right click the document, set the Smudge size to about 13 px and Hardness to 100.

11.

Now simply click inside the splatter, hold your mouse button and drag it down to create a running color effect.

Draw three of them, and you can change the Smudge size for a more realistic effect.

12.

And now, for our transparent text.

Choose the Horizontal Type Mask Tool.

13.

Click inside the label and type the text you want to appear on your discount label.

After you type your text, click outside of text and drag it to adjust it's position.

14.

Click the Commit button.

15.

Press Delete key to delete the text selection.

16.

Now repeat the steps from 13 to 15 to add the additional text you want on your discount label.

Press Ctrl + D to deselect selection.

17.

Let's add some minimalistic detail to our label.

Choose the Line Tool.

18.

Set the Fill pixels option (see picture).

19.

And draw a couple of thin lines over your text.

Just a few, don't exaggerate.

20.

Let's now get rid of the unnecessary space around the discount label.

Choose the Crop Tool.

21.

And select the crop area like I did.

Simply draw a selection then adjust it by clicking and dragging the edges.

Press Enter to finish the crop.

22.

Set the Opacity of label layer to 90%.

Yes I know it says 80% but I took the screen shot to early ;)

Now right click the Background layer and choose Delete Layer to get rid of the background and make your new discount label transparent.

23.

Let's now save our awesome new layer the right way, so it actually will be a transparent anywhere you will put it.

In the menu click File and choose Save for Web and Devices...

Choose PNG-24 as a file type and choose the Transparency option.

Click Save and save your awesome new discount label to a folder.

24.

This is how it will look like if you apply it onto another image.
