Create a Hefe Instagram photo filter using Photoshop
Let me show you how to recreate the Hefe effect from the ever so popular photo sharing mobile app Instagram.

1.

Open the photo you want to apply the Instagram Hefe filter to.
Click here if you want to learn how to create the Brannan Instagram filter.

In the menu click Image, Adjustments and choose Brightness/Contrast...
Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.
|

In the menu click Image, Adjustments and choose Hue/Saturation... (or press Ctrl + U for a keyboard shortcut)
Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

Now press Ctrl + J to duplicate the Background layer, set the new layer's Blending mode to Overlay and Opacity to 20%.
|

|
Press Ctrl + E to merge the two layers.
|
|
|

In the menu click Image, Adjustments and choose Brightness/Contrast...
Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.
|

Press Ctrl + A to select the whole current layer.
In the menu click Select and choose Transform Selection.
Now set the W: (width) H: (height) of the selection, both to 90% (see picture).
Press Enter.

This is how your Photo and selection should look like at this moment.

In the menu click Select, Modify and choose Feather... (or press Shift + F6 for a keyboard shortcut)
Set the Feather Radius to somewhere between 100 and 200 pixels, depends how big is your image.
My image dimensions are 800 x 600 pixels so I've entered Feather Radius of 100 pixels.
Click OK.

In the menu click Select and choose Inverse (or press Shift + Ctrl + I for a keyboard shortcut).

In the menu click Edit and choose Fill... (or press Shift + F5 for a keyboard shortcut).
In the Fill settings window, choose Color... as Contents Use ...
|
|
|

... and set H: (Hue) to 60, S: (Saturation) to 0 and B: (Brightness) to 71 % (see picture).
Click OK.

This is how your photograph should look like by now and there's only one thing left to do ...
|

Set the Layer 1 blending mode to Multiply.
|
|
|

|
|
And you are done.
