Let me show you a neat one minute trick on how to make your photographs more vivid and professional looking in Gimp.

  Author: mat | Version: 2.6.11 | 3rd May 2012 |

1.
In Gimp, open a photo you want add some character to.

I'm gonna use a photo of my friend's awesome twins.

2.
Go to the Layers window and click Create a duplicate of the layer button. (see picture).

Press Ctrl + L if you don't see the Layers window.

3.
Set the new duplicate layer Mode to Overlay.

4.
  And that's it!

5.
  And for the close-up.

It's really a nice and simple way to boost up colors and contrast, thus giving subjects on your photos more character.
