How to make Windows 7 shutdown or restart faster

If you are tired of waiting for your Windows 7 computer to shutdown or restart, you can create a new shortcut that will speed up the process considerably.

1.

Lets create a new desktop shortcut.

Right click anywhere on your desktop click New and choose Shortcut ...

2.

... In the shortcut settings window, enter shutdown /s /f /t 0 into the Type the location of the item: field.

If you want to make a fast restart shortcut then enter
shutdown /r /f /t 0 into the field.

Click Next ...

3.

... Now change the name of your new shortcut to something like Shutdown or Restart if you are going for a fast restart shortcut.

Click Finish.

4.

That is it your super fast shutdown shortcut is done and ready to be triggered.

Don't forget to save your work before you use your new shutdown shortcut for it will immediately force close all your running applications and proceed with the shutdown (or restart).

For a bonus, let me show you how to change the icon as the default one is looking kind of ugly and hard to spot on a desktop.

5.

Right click your new Shutdown or Restart shortcut and choose Properties ...

6.

... click the Change Icon... button ...

7.

... click OK if you get this kind of a warning ...

8.

... and choose the new icon for your Shutdown shortcut.

Just double click to choose it.

Click OK.

9.

And here's my shinny new super quick Shutdwon button.

10.

To make it even more practical, pin it to your Windows taskbar (see picture).

If you are not sure how to pin shortcuts or programs to Windows taskbar, click here.

And again, don't forget to save your work before you use your new shutdown shortcut as it will immediately force close all your running applications and proceed with the shutdown (or restart).
