We will design a nice brushed metal, aluminium looking icon from scratch, using Photoshop.

Set the foreground color to #5f5f5f.

Create a new layer and draw a rounded rectangle.

4.

Click the layer fx button and choose Gradient Overlay...

5.

Leave the default black to white Gradient and set Opacity to 77%.

Click OK.

Press Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer.

Press Ctrl + T to enter free transform mode then set Width (W:) and Height (H:) to 96% (see picture).

Set the new gradient as I did.

The left and right color should be set to color code #575757 the middle one to #b6b6b6.

Just click under the middle of a gradient to add a new color (see picture).

10.

Choose the Inner Shadow on the left side and choose the same settings as I did.

11.

Choose the Bevel and Emboss on the left side then choose the same Structure settings as I did ...

12.

... and same Shading settings as I did.

Click OK.

13.

This is how it should look like by now.

14.

Choose the Horizontal Type Tool.

15.

Choose some "beefy font", enter a letter, set an according size and place it in a middle of the icon.

You can press Ctrl + T to resize the letter.

16.

Click effect (fx) button of the new text layer and choose Inner Shadow.

17.

Choose the same settings as I did.

18.

Choose Bevel and Emboss on left side and choose the same Structure settings as I did ...

19.

... and choose the same Shading settings as I did.

20.

Choose Stroke on the left side and choose the same settings as I did.

Click OK.

21.

Create a new layer.

Press D to set a black foreground color.

Press Alt + Delete to fill the layer with black color.

In the menu click Filter, Noise and choose Add Noise...

Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

22.

Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

All you have to do now is set Screen for a new layer's blending mode.
