Chick in an egg

What was first, chicken or an egg? Doesn't really matter at this point, we're just going to put the chicken back into the egg.

1.

Click here to download picture of a chick.
Click here to download picture of an egg.

After you download the pictures, open them.

2.

Now let's cut the eggshell out.

Choose the Magnetic Lasso Tool.

3.

And start selecting around the eggshell ...

4.

... so you get the same selection as me.

5.

In the menu click Select and choose Refine Edge... (Alt + Ctrl + R for a keyboard shorcut).

Choose the appropriate settings, you can try mine, if they don't work for you change them a bit.

Click OK.

6.

Press Ctrl + C to copy the selection, go to the chick image and press Ctrl + V to paste the selected eggshell.

7.

Press Ctrl + T to enter Free Transform mode and start adjusting the egg shell so it fits the chick.

Hold the Ctrl key to preserve the layer ratio. Just keep clicking and dragging until you get the position similar to mine.

Don't worry about the fur sticking out of the shell, we will get rid of it in a few.

8.

Rotate the egg a to the left (see picture).

Press Enter to confirm the transformation.

9.

Now choose the Clone Stamp Tool.

10.

Select the chick layer.

11.

Press and hold Alt key, then click to select the source for cloning ...

12.

... now release the Alt key and start cloning the background so you get rid of the chick's fur sticking out of the shell.

13.

This is how it should look like by now.

14.

Now choose the Burn Tool.

15.

Set Exposure to 50% ...

16.

... and start clicking the chick's legs on the area where they come out of the egg shell.

We want to recreate the shadow effect on chick's legs dropping by the eggshell.

Do it on both legs.

17.

Select the eggshell layer.

18.

And with Burn Tool tool still selected, "burn" edge of the shell a bit for a better contrast (see picture).

19.

Select the chick layer again.

20.

And with Burn Tool tool still selected, "burn" the chick's fur a bit where the egg crack drops (see picture).

21.

And you're done, don't think that chicks too happy you put im back in the egg though.
