Default programs

Let's see how to set which programs should by default open certain files in Windows 7.

  Author: mat | Version: Windows 7 | 11th October 2011 |

1.

Click the Start button and enter default programs into Search programs and files field.

2.

In the Programs search results click Default Programs.

3.

Choose Set your default programs.

4.

In my case I have some Adobe products opening image files like png or jpg by default. I don't want that, I want the Windows Photo Viewer to open all my image files.

Click the Program you want set as default, I selected Windows Photo Viewer...

5.

...and clicked the Set this program as default on the right side.

Now all my image files (.png, .jpg, ...) are going to get opened by Windows Photo Viewer.

6.

You can also set exactly what kind of file type are going to be opened by a certain program.

Let's take Paint as an example.

7.

Click Choose defaults for this program.

8.

And select the files you want to associate with Paint. I selected .bmp type of files.

9.

Click Save to store your settings.
