Create aureole for the saint with Photoshop

We're going to put a glowing golden ring also known as aureole hovering over joker's head using Photoshop.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 4th October 2011 |

1.

Open a picture of a person you want to turn into a saint.

I've decided to "saintanize" one of the baddest villains of all time, the Joker.

2.

Turn on the rulers by clicking View and Rulers.

Hold the ruler on the left with a mouse ....

3.

... and drag it to about the middle of the picture.

4.

Drag the ruler from the top as well.

The lines will help us create a circle in the middle.

5.

Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool (see picture).

If you cant see the Elliptical Marque Tool at first just right click the Rectangular Marquee Tool and the choose
Elliptical Marque Tool

6.

From the middle of the document, where the lines cross drag the mouse out of the center while holding the Alt and Shift keys (see picture).

We're going to turn this selection into an Aureole.

7.

Create a new layer.

8.

Select the White color as a foreground color.

You can press D and then  X to set the white foreground color using your keyboard.

9.

In the menu click Edit and choose Stroke...

In the new window choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

10.

Unselect the selection by pressing Ctrl + D.

And get rid of the ruler lines by clicking View and choosing Clear Guides.

11.

Press Ctrl + T, then hold the Ctrl and move the upper corners a little bit closer together (see picture) ....

12.

...pull the bottom corners while holding the Ctrl a bit to the top and further apart (see picture).

Play around to fine tune the ring, no need to hold the Ctrl key all the time.

Press Enter when done.

13.

Now press the V key to activate the Move Tool and drag the ring over the saint's to be head.

14.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Gaussian Blur ...

In the new settings window set the radius to about 3.9 pixels and click OK.

15.

In the menu click Layer, Layer Style and choose Outer Glow...

In the new settings window choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

16.

We're done!

It kinda suits him. ;)
