Create a simple gas planet from scratch in Photoshop

An awesome tutorial suitable for Photoshop beginners and intermediates where we create a cool looking gas planet from scratch,  by applying a couple of rendering functions and a few tricks.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 4th March 2013 |

1.

Create a new document and press D to set the black foreground color.

Choose the Paint Bucket Tool and click the document to paint it black.

2.

Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool.

3.

Hold Shift key and draw a circular selection.

Holding the shift key creates a perfect circle.

4.

Click to set a new foreground color.

5.

Choose a dark version of the color you want your gas planet to appear in.

Click OK.

In the next step we will choose the lighter version of the same color.

6.

Now click to set a new background color.

7.

Now choose a lighter version of the color you chose in the previous step.

Click OK.

8.

In the menu click Filter, Render and choose Clouds.

This is how your image should look like at this point.

9.

Now choose the Smudge Tool.

10.

Right-click the document and choose an appropriate smudge size and hardness to 0%.

My planet is pretty small that's why I chose the Size of 35 px.

11.

Set the smudge brush Strength to about 70% (see picture).

12.

Now click and start smudging your planet. Simply click at one side of the planet and drag the mouse to the other side.

Image your planet consisting of two paints that are still fresh and then you use your finger and drag it across the planet. This is what the smudge tools basically does.

Use the History function to undo the smudges that don't end up quite as you like them to.

13.

In the menu click Filter, Distort and choose Spherize...

Set the Amount to 100% and Mode to Normal.

Click OK.

14.

In the menu click Filter, Render and choose Lightning Effects...

Choose the similar settings as I did and don't close the window yet ...

15.

Now you need to set how the sun falls onto your new gas planet.

Click on the little points to resize the light source and click and move in the middle of the planet to move the source light.

Just keep playing and moving the points until you are satisfied with the way light falls over the planet.

Click OK when done.

16.

Press Ctrl + D to remove the selection and enjoy your newest creation.
